Lewis "Lew" Wallace was born on April 10, 1827, in Brookville, Indiana. He was the second of four sons born to Esther French Wallace (née Test) and David Wallace. Lew's father, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, left the military in 1822 and moved to Brookville, where he established a law practice and entered Indiana politics. Cyrus W. Rayhill (1835-1905) was born in Washington County, Indiana. Cyrus enlisted as a lieutentant in B Company of the 16th Indiana Infantry Regiment in July 1862. He resigned his commission on 30 march 1863, likely due to disability. The 1870 Census indicates he was a farmer and he and his wife Hannah lived in Christian County, Illinois with their five children. Widowed in 1878, he continued to live in Pana, Illinois.
